Port Waikato is only a short 1 hour drive south of Auckland (faster if you are a boy racer).
Driving Directions from Auckland
- Take Highway 1 South to Pokeno - take the exit at Pokeno
- Follow the sign to Taukau on the right
- Keep going down this road road until the T-junction at State Highway 22 and take a left. Follow the sign to Port Waikato.
- You will cross a narrow 2 lane bridge over the Waikato River (Tuakau Bridge). After the bridge, take an immediate right (follow the sign) to Port Waikato
- Follow the road until you reach Port Waikato!
Hazards on the way:
Roads may become flooded during heaving rains, so take your time if it has been raining alot. Some parts of the road can get severe washouts. Also I have hit several suicidal possums driving on the way back at night.
People tend drive quite fast on the stretch of road between the bridge and Port Waikato, if you like take your time like I do, there are some long stretches of stretch road where you can let the speed demons pass you.
